MACRO 50mm F2.8 EX DG / MACRO 105mm F2.8 EX DG
Sigma Macro lens has been highly reputed and I have been using five SIGMA MACRO 50mm F2.8 EX lenses for product photography.
This time, I had a chance to test the new SIGMA MACRO 50mm F2.8 EX DG and MACRO 105mm F2.8 EX DG which are re-designed for Digital SLR cameras.

I am almost completely satisfied with the performance of current MACRO 50mm F2.8 EX, but I also recognized some points of this lens that needs to be optimized especially when using this lens with high pixel count digital SLR cameras. The most significant point is the distortion which occurs when you shoot a flat surface. The next point is a lack of uniformity of the colors when shooting a flat and half tone surfaces.
These significant points are not noticeable in normal cases, however when using this lens under the critical situations as mentioned above, I cannot be satisfied with the results. .
This time, I tested this new SIGMA MACRO lens and verified if these points have been improved. Therefore, I judged this lens to be worth the replacement, even with the additional cost.
The resolution of the central area is even improved from the old type Macro lens. Overall, this new lens provides the clear and high contrast images.

Using this lens with Digital SLR cameras, the angle of view will be the equivalent of an 85mm lens, in case of SD10 and 75mm equivalent in case of other APS-Sized D-SLR, which is suitable for product photography. In case of 4x5 inch camera, the angle of view will be approximately 240mm lens equivalent.

Without the need for an adaptor lens, this lens has the capability of the close-up photography up to 1:1 magnification. This lens is designed to reduce the influence of harmful light caused by reflections from the digital image sensor and you can use this Macro lens very effectively with Digital SLR Camera.

SIGMA MACRO 105mm lens with SD10 will have 178mm lens equivalent angle of view, which is too long for product photography, therefore I have not had much chance of using this lens before. But if you take a photo in a larger studio with digital SLRs which have no shift focus capability, you will be able to take the images with less- distortion. I found this to be an effective technique for Digital Photography.

For product photography, we often use 4x5 inch cameras because of the shift focus capability. In that case, we normally use 240mm-300mm lens and 450-600mm lens, in case we need to be very careful about distortion or take a large number of group photos.
If you use this SIGMA MACRO 105mm lens with SD10, the angle of view will be 500mm lens equivalent, in case of 4x5 inch camera In the case of other APS-size digital SLR, the angle of view will be approximately 470mm both of which will be ideal for product photography.

The image quality of this MACRO 105mm lens is better than that of the SIGMA MACRO 50mm F2.8 EX DG. The image resolution in peripheral areas is superior and you cannot find the unevenness of the color at all.

This lens provides the longer working distance from the object to the lens; therefore, I would like to recommend you to use this lens to experience the different advantages, such as easy lighting and no distortion.

Before using this lens, I had thought 105mm MACRO lens was not suitable for studio photography with digital SLRs. But this lens changed my mind. From now on, I would like to utilize this lens as often as possible.

In that sense, I am looking forward to trying the new telephoto macro lens, SIGMA APO 150mm F2.8 EX DG HSM.
